Hearing loss can affect a child’s development of speech and language skills. When a child has difficulty hearing, the areas of the brain used for communication may not develop appropriately.
This can impact speech, reading, learning, school success and social skills. In adults, especially seniors, those with hearing loss have a greater risk of developing dementia than older adults with normal hearing.
Cognitive abilities (including memory and concentration) decline faster in older adults with hearing loss than in older adults with normal hearing. Hearing loss in adults can also impact quality of life, a person’s ability to interact with others, and negatively impacts mental health.
